“It has been decided that for the year 2013, seat allotment in IITs and NITs will be done independently as was done in the previous years,” a notice on JEE (advanced) website said.

Breaking from the tradition, this year the second round of seat allotment for IITs and the first round of seat allotments for NITs were to be done together on July 9.

Under the combined process, a student who would have taken an IIT seat after the second round of counseling could not take an NIT seat. Likewise, somebody who would have had taken an NIT seat could not opt for an IIT seat.

This would have ensured that a child does not occupy both NIT and IIT seats, thus, paving the way for more students taking admission.
