When 80-year-old Daljeet Singh Arora went to sleep on Sunday night, he had everyone he cared for in life — a grandson he loved dearly, a son who took care of his every need and a devoted daughter-in-law.

But when he woke up at 7.30 am on Monday, life, as he knew it, came to an abrupt, shocking end. His only grandson, who Arora thought was asleep, lay lifeless in his room and his son and daughter were already dead on railway tracks, a few kilometres away from their house.

What went wrong?
Around 9.30 pm on Sunday night, Arora's son, Saminder, came to him and said that he and his wife Mini were going for a party. They then drove away in their Hyundai Accent car. As Arora slept early, he did not ask them any questions and went off to sleep.
According to the police, Saminder and his wife first allegedly killed their son Karandeep and then wrote two separate suicide notes in English.
According to the police, some lines in Saminder's suicide note read thus: "Dearest Daddy, this will be the most difficult night for you. I want you to know that I'm really sorry for all the pain that I have caused. May God never give a son like me to anyone." Worried about his father's well being, Saminder also told him where he had kept some money for his immediate use.
The couple, after allegedly killing their son, then took their car to the Jasola Apollo metro station and parked it a stone's throw away from the southeast Delhi police station. The distraught couple then went to the railway tracks and allegedly jumped in front of a train.

What led to the tragedy?
Although the police are yet to ascertain the exact reasons behind the Singh family deaths, the suicide notes left behind by Saminder and Mini suggest that financial problems may have led to them taking the extreme step.
Saminder owned a factory — Aspro Implements Private Limited, manufacturing aluminium cups and other products — in the Nathupura Industrial area in Sonepat.
"He had suffered heavy losses in business and was under debt," said Virender Singh Chahal, additional commissioner of police (southeast).
The police said that for the past month, the family was under heavy depression.
Mini had also been unwell for some time and had said in her suicide note that as her son Karandeep and she, herself, had become a liability to her husband, she wanted to end her life.
