Jamia students worried

Students of Jamia Milia Islamia are a worried lot. Jamia's name has been associated with a dead terrorist and with two others caught by the Delhi Police, reports HT Correspondent.

"It is disturbing to hear such news. We don't want the world to think that Jamia harbours terrorists. It is a world class university," said Tarranum Saeed, BA student of Jamia.

She said the university had denied links with Atif Bashir. We were told by our teachers that the guy (Atif) was not a student of Jamia," said Saeed.

Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hasan has been vociferous in his denial. "As of yesterday night (Saturday) none of the terrorists caught have any student record in Jamia. The reports are baseless," said Hasan. He denied any knowledge of terrorists caught by the police on Sunday.

"I don’t know of today's events. Even if those arrested are our students I do not have reason to hide facts," he said .

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.G.S. Dhaliwal on Sunday announced that two of the terrorists caught were students of Jamia. While Zia-ur-Rehman is a student of BA third year, Mohammad Shakil is pursuing final year MA (Economics).

"There are 14,000 students studying in Jamia, which is a secular institution," said Hasan. "We will throw out any person who indulges in communal or terrorist activities."

Students are having a tough time. "I have friends near Batla House and the situation is tense. I am not sure if we can go to college on Monday," said Sidra Farid, an MA student.
