Takenaka, a world-renowned economist, has held several ministerial posts including economics and financial services minister in the cabinet of PM Junichiro Koizumi between 2001 and 2005. He helped restore confidence in Japan's banking system by demanding that banks admitted to and wrote off bad loans.
Abe has impressed markets with a strong fiscal and monetary stimulus package, "Aben-omics", to revive the economy and end 20 years of stagflation.
