Karia Munda becomes first tribal Dy Speaker

Karia Munda (73) was elected as the Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha by a voice vote on Monday. He became the first tribal to be elected as a deputy speaker. Meira Kumar of Congress became the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha on June 3.

He became the first tribal to be elected as a deputy speaker. Meira Kumar of Congress became the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha on June 3.

Munda, a seven-time MP, was a minister in the Morarji Desai government. A Central Working Committee member of the BJP since 1980, he was made a Cabinet minister during the NDA regime headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Leader of Opposition LK Advani proposed the name of Munda, who won from Khunti in Jharkhand, for the post and was seconded by all parties.
