Kejriwal meets L-G, demands action against ABVP

Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said lieutenant governor Anil Baijal assured him that a proper probe will be conducted in the violence at Ramjas College on February 22.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal met lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday to demand action against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) volunteers allegedly involved in violence that followed protests at Ramjas College on February 22.

“BJP stage manages events where anti-national slogans are raised. The ABVP then does goondagardi on campuses... No arrest has still been made in the JNU incident,” Kejriwal told mediapersons after the meeting.

The chief minister said Baijal has assured that proper probe in the violence and also threats received by Kashmir martyr’s daughter Gurmehar Kaur, who triggered a storm on social media after she posted a profile picture holding a placard that read, “I am a student of Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me.”

Kaur approached the Delhi Commission for Women on Monday alleging she received rape threats on social media after her post. Delhi Police registered an FIR in the matter on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Aam Aadmi Party leaders also jumped into the controversy. Three women members — Atishi Marlena, Alka Lamba and Sarita Singh — met senior police officers to demand action in the matter.

“Though we had an appointment with Amulya Pattnaik (Delhi Police commissioner), he was not in when we went to his office. We then met a senior IPS official and shared our concerns with him and submitted our complaint to him. We want the attacks on women investigated. We also want the cyber cell to investigate the threats made to Gurmehar Kaur,” said Marlena, adviser to deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.
