While 15,000 flats are said to be ready, the Delhi cabinet on Thursday gave its approval to allot 10,000 flats in the first phase. Though more than 1.80 lakh people have applied for subsidised houses, the draw of lots will be conducted for one lakh applicants.

“There are 15,000 flats that are ready and another 50,000 are being constructed. We have decided to conduct the draw for one lakh applicants. The remaining applicants will be accommodated the next time,” a Delhi government official said.

The official said while Scheduled Caste applicants will get the flats free of cost, general category allottees will have to pay R68,000. The remaining cost will be shared by the Centre and the Delhi government.

The flats have been built under the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme.

The government has also decided to strengthen public transport in areas where these flats have been constructed. “The flats are of modern design and the allottees will really find them comfortable and convenient,” chief minister Sheila Dikshit said.

Officials said Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board will verify the documents of the allottees before handing over the flat’s possession.
