"Considering the fact that convict continued to assault unarmed victim Ravi with a wooden stick till he died a painful death, convict is sentenced with rigorous life imprisonment for commission of offence punishable under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC," additional sessions judge Surinder S Rathi said.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on Anil, saying Rs 50,000 out of it would go to Ravi's mother as compensation for loosing her son as well as receiving injuries.

Rathi, a resident of railway colony near New Delhi railway station, was held guilty of beating his neighbour Ravi to death in the wee hours of November 10, 2008, after the latter failed to return the money.

According to the prosecution, Anil was seen beating Ravi with a wooden stick by victim's mother Mooli Devi as well as neighbour Fateh Khan.

The two witnesses deposed that they woke up to the noise of quarrel and saw Anil mercilessly assaulting Ravi. The victim's mother also sustained fractures in her leg and arm while trying to save her son, they said. “The accused’s intention to kill Ravi is evident and deducible from his utterances and act of incessant hurling of danda blows till Ravi died," the judge observed.
