“The men attempted to molest her and tried to force her on to their bike at which a scuffle broke out. When she objected, they shot her,” a police officer said.

The victim, identified as Pooja, a resident of east Delhi’s Bhajanpura, was shot thrice.

A passerby informed the police and she was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ Trauma Centre where she was declared dead.

One of the men, Munshiram from Bihar, has been arrested.

“We have identified both assailants as residents of Abu Fazal Enclave area,” the officer said.

The incident comes just three months after the brutal gang-rape of a trainee physiotherapist in a moving bus, and at a time when police presence on the Capital’s roads is said to have been increased.

A Press Trust of India report said the victim and her assailant may have known each other and it could be a case of personal enmity. It also said the men were drunk and that the victim was with her husband.
