Panic gripped the Metro's Mayur Vihar Phase-1 station on Saturday evening as personal enmity sparked off an abusive argument between two men and left one of them with a gunshot wound just outside the premises.
Commuters and residents watched as Shibu Das, a 37-year-old driver, scrambled to take cover inside the station after being allegedly shot by Deepak (who goes by one name only), his estranged wife's boyfriend.
"I was going to the market when I heard a loud bang. A crowd had gathered near the Metro station's entrance some metres away. I saw a man in a blood-soaked shirt being carried away on a stretcher," said Suhas Sharma, a software engineer.
Others saw Das running towards the station, a bang emanating from behind followed by his shrieks.
"He kept running up the stairs and collapsed at the security check. His entire shirt had turned red," said Vishesh Garg, a 13-year-old student.
Police said Deepak had asked Das to meet him outside the Metro station's gate No. 2 to settle their differences. An argument followed and Deepak allegedly pulled out a gun.
"It looks like a case of personal enmity," said additional DCP (crime and railways) Bhairon Singh Gurjar.
Das is fighting for life at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. Deepak is on the run.
