Manipur militant held in north Delhi's Shakurpur

A 31-year-old self-styled "fighting commander" of a Manipur-based banned terrorist outfit was arrested on Thursday by the special cell of police for his alleged involvement in cases of murder, abduction and other unlawful activities. HT reports.

The outlaw carried a bounty of Rs 50,000.

Mohammad Abbas Khan was held from north Delhi's Shakurpur after inputs were received from Manipur police about his escape from judicial custody while lodged at a hospital in Imphal.

"Abbas, a self-styled fighting commander of the People's United Liberation Front (PULF), has been involved in 12 cases of murder, abduction and charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of Manipur," said Sanjeev Yadav, DCP (special cell).

It was learnt that Abbas was earlier arrested in June 2010 for vehicle theft and making forged documents for stolen vehicles in several parts of Delhi.

After his arrest, he was taken by Manipur police from where he was remanded in judicial custody.

On December 1, 2012, Abbas was hospitalised at Imphal's Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital from where he managed to escape. Manipur Police then announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

During interrogation, Abbas told police that his cousin Shera had asked him to join PULF in January 2007. Shera was former self-styled deputy secretary (finance) of PULF. "Abbas collected extortion money from several people and received a part of the money," Yadav said.
