In keeping with a Supreme Court directive, the Delhi government has drafted a bill making registration of marriages mandatory for residents of the Capital.

The Delhi marriage registration bill was approved at a meeting of the Delhi cabinet presided by chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday.

The bill would now be sent to the union home ministry for approval. Following approval of the ministry, the bill will be tabled in the Delhi assembly.

The bill is expected to ensure that women who are deserted get their rights like financial help and custody of children from their estranged husbands.

Law to curb food adulteration
The Delhi government would enforce a stringent food adulteration law from Saturday which provides for maximum punishment of life imprisonment and a penalty of up to R10 lakh for those found guilty.

The food safety and standards act, which provides for penalty on manufacturers of adulterated food items including fine of rRs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh to be adjudicated by an officer of the rank of additional district magistrate, was passed by the Parliament in 2006 and will be implemented from August 6, Delhi health minister AK Walia said.

As per the provisions of the law, adulterers may face six months to life imprisonment depending on the nature of offences.
