MCD Polls: Delhi civic bodies ask politicians to remove posters, banners

The commissioners of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) have asked officials to implement the Defacement of Property Act under which the civic bodies have power to slap a fine of Rs 50,000 or send a person to six months in jail if he/she is found defacing public property.

A senior official of north corporation said the civic body during a recent meeting had decided that the workers of the corporation will take the help of local police officers to clear posters and banners in areas under their jurisdiction.

A south corporation official said: “We have asked politicians to remove their posters and banners within a couple of days, failing which we will take action.”

The official added that residents could come forward and register complaints if they found anyone flouting norms later. “The corporation has examined most of the areas where walls have been defaced but we also encourage common people to register complaints,” he added.

The Delhi municipal polls are scheduled for April 22.
