MCD set to begin another budget session on empty promises

At Rs 7,000 crore, the budget for 2011-12 was the biggest ever set by the corporation, but nearly a year after, more than Rs 1,500 crore remain unutilised.



Last year, the committee had promised to build stronger roads and more toilets for women and a working women’s hostel in each ward. Moreover, it had assured to spend Rs 50 crore on building civic amenities in unauthorised colonies, but not a rupee has been spent on any of these projects.

The committee had proposed a Rs 1,000 crore scheme to build roads.

“The plan is to use ready mix concrete technology and pebble machines to construct roads, which will be 10-12 inches thick,” Standing Committee chairman Yogender Chandolia had said.

Besides, the MCD had assured that money would be spent on unauthorised colonies, which come under the Delhi government. For its sanitation workers, the committee had announced affordable homes, which again has not seen any work. In its pilot project, 240 houses were to be sold at very cheap rates, but the houses are yet to be constructed.

Chandolia said the projects could not take shape as the Delhi government refused to sanction enough funds.
