The Home Ministry had sought formal approval of the cabinet committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure that Capt. Raghu Raman, head of the project, could meet the 2011 deadline.
The information grid would be placed under the National Counter Terrorism Centre when the full-fledged body becomes a reality.
No security agency will be given any new rights to access data under Natgrid.
But interlinking the database to a central server accessible to security agencies would ensure that information across different parameters would just be a few clicks away.
