Next, fly over Outer Ring Road

Seven flyovers and an underpass promise to make 14-km stretch between Mangolpuri and Wazirabad signal-free and ease traffic flow, report Moushumi Das Gupta & Atul Mathur.

If things go as planned, at least a part of the Outer Ring Road would become a smooth cruise for vehicular traffic in about three years.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed to construct an elaborate network of eight flyovers, including one that would be Delhi’s largest flyover, on three stretches of Outer Ring Road. Once complete, it would make a 14-kilometre stretch on the road, between Mangolpuri and Wazirabad, completely signal-free to ensure fast movement of traffic.

In fact, the proposal includes three flyovers of more than two kilometres in length each on this stretch of the Outer Ring Road. The longest flyover, with a length of 2.5 kilometres, would come up between Mangolpuri and Madhuban Chowk.

The proposals were cleared by the Unified Traffic & Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre at a meeting last Friday. The centre was set up in January to formulate policies to enhance mobility and reduce congestion in the city. Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna chairs the centre.

The Lieutenant Governor approved the three projects last Friday. A senior PWD official said the actual proposal was to make a 17-kilometre stretch of the road, from Viakspuri to Wazirabad, signal-free in four parts — Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh, Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk, Madhuban Chowk to Mukerba Chowk and Mukerba Chowk to Wazirabad. A decision on the first segment, from Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh, would be taken up in the next meeting of the traffic infrastructure centre. The other three sections have been cleared.

The Rs 1,000 crore project will be implemented by the PWD. “Work on the project will start only after the Commonwealth Games are over. If we start work now, it can result in diversions and disruption of traffic. Now that the project has been approved, we will use the time to get all the necessary clearances from agencies like the Delhi Urban Arts Commission, etc.” said an official of the traffic infrastructure centre.

Officials said the need for the flyovers was felt in the last couple of years because of the traffic saturation on the Outer Ring Road.

Figures available with the Delhi traffic Police say during peak hours, the traffic volume on Outer Ring Road crossings is between 8,000 and 10,000 passenger car units, about 40 per cent more than the existing capacity of the road. “If we do not augment the capacity, the volume of traffic on this stretch is likely to touch 30,000 PCU in another 15 years,” said an official of the traffic infrastructure centre.

As part of the project, a six-lane flyover would come up between Mangolpuri and Madhuban Chowk for traffic from Som Vihar to Deepali Chowk. The 2.5-kilometre flyover, once completed, will also be the longest in the Capital.

The remaining six flyover will come up on the two other stretches of the Outer Ring Road. The first stretch is eight kilometres long, from Wazirabad Chowk to Mukerba Chowk.
