NGO Citizens Front for Water Democracy (CFWD) had earlier raised questions about the purchase of 14.2 lakh meters by the DJB against the requirement of 3.5 lakh unmetred connections. On the reported counter-statement by the DJB on their allegation last week, the Front termed it as “nothing but an act to protect corrupt people involved”. “On the one hand, DJB purchased and has plans to purchase water meters and on the other, it has allowed consumers to procure and replace their defective/non-functional meters of DJB-approved brands,” a statement from SA Naqvi from CFWD and Sanjay Sharma from Water Workers Alliance said.

“We demand a detailed enquiry and a CBI investigation into this,” they said. DJB CEO Debashree Mukherjee said,“Although we have got sanction for 8 lakh meters, we are purchasing only another four lakh meters for the next four years.”
