"The prime minister is deeply disturbed to hear news of the shameful incident. He has seen news visuals of the unacceptable treatment meted out by police officers to some women protesting against this incident," a statement from the PM's office said.

The PMO statement further stated that Singh had spoken to Delhi L-G Tejinder Khanna and conveyed to him the need for strictest possible action against the errant officials.

Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde sought a report from the Delhi Police about the brutal incident. Home Secretary RK Singh said, "I have spoken to the police chief. Strict action must be taken against policemen if any dereliction of duty is established."

BJP slams CM
Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP on Friday mocked at Delhi's official tagline launched by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, saying it should be 'Balatkaar Dilli' rather than 'Dildar Dilli'.

Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said the Capital had become unsafe for women, especially during the past 14 years of Congress rule. "Incidents of rape and molestation of girls are happening almost every day. CM Sheila Dikshit coined a tagline 'Dildar Dilli' but I say it is 'Balatkar Dilli'," he said.

Goel said the party has cancelled the cultural programme for Saturday.
