"After any major surgery, especially of the heart, the stomach does not function very well for nearly 24 hours. So we do not advise something to be taken because they may vomit... We have started giving him (PM) liquid. I think he has taken water, coconut water, fruit juices during the day," Dr Ramakant Panda, the cardio-vascular surgeon from Asian Heart Institute who head the team of doctors, said.

When asked for his choice, Singh preferred coconut water and fruit juices which were given to him in moderate quantities repeatedly through the day.

He also relished a cup of tea during the day.

Panda said Singh would soon be given semi-solid and from tomorrow evening he would be given solid food.

Singh was also given some respiratory and movement exercises to do.

During the day, no visitors were permitted to meet the prime minister but doctors allowed his wife and daughter to visit him for brief period.

"He just smiled seeing his wife and daughter but did not talk to them," said Dr Vijay D'silva, an ICU specialist from AHI.
