A 30-year-old sharpshooter was arrested for lending ‘logistic support’ to assist two gangsters in escaping from police custody, the crime branch said on Monday.

The accused, identified as Sumit alias Vicky, a resident of Sonepat in Haryana, was nabbed from Najafgarh on Sunday and an improvised semi-automatic pistol with five bullets was recovered from his possession, said Ravindra Yadav, additional commissioner of police (crime).
“He was arrested after we received a tip-off about his movement in southwest Delhi on Sunday afternoon. A trap was laid on the Dhansa-Najafgarh road and he was apprehended,” said additional CP Yadav. During interrogation, the crime branch claimed, Sumit admitted that he had been asked by the notorious interstate gangster Sandeep Chitania to meet Kishori and Anil Mann, residents of Sonepat, to arrange for his escape from the custody of the Haryana Police in February 2012.
The trio, according to the crime branch, had then proceeded to make the required arrangements intended to help Chitania and his associate Neetu Dabodha escape.
“Sumit along with Kishori and Anil Mann had snatched the carbine and handcuffs from the Haryana Police personnel and helped Sandeep and Neetu Dabodha in fleeing. Sandeep is still on the run,” Yadav said.
