Growing investment: With the growing investment in the oil and gas sector in India in the last decade, the exploration and production (E&P) industry is a sunshine sector in the country. India remains one of the least explored regions in the world with a well density of 20 per 10,000 square kilometers. Of the 26 sedimentary basins, only 6 have been explored so far, there is lots of scope for the E&P industry — creating opportunities for Petroleum Engineers and Geo Sciences professionals.
Room for talented individuals: Currently there is a limited resource pool available in this sector and hence there is room for talented individuals to enter the industry. World-class discoveries and developments, like the one in Rajasthan by Cairn India, which is one of the biggest in the country and will be responsible for 20 percent of domestic crude production post 2010-will create opportunities for professionals to work on.
Eligibility criteria: At Cairn India we engage with the Universities so that we can attract the young talent and introduce them into the Cairn India Culture. We offer opportunities to students in Petroleum Engineering and Geo Sciences, for pursuing internships and projects. These projects and internships are usually live projects. We have an ongoing relationship with 4-5 leading geo-technical institutes and continue to hire from these campuses to ensure a steady talent inflow.
Women engineers: As part of our recruitment plan for the Rajasthan Operations, the first group of Operations Engineering graduates from Government Engineering Colleges in Rajasthan have been handpicked to work on one of India’s biggest oil and gas development projects in the last two decades. Women engineers were also recruited for frontline operational engineering roles.
In the coming years the E&P industry will certainly create numerous opportunities for people pursuing Petroleum Engineering and Geo Sciences careers – besides traditional engineering roles.
