The bench of justice Rajive Bhalla issued the directions while observing that the cycle rickshaws and three-wheelers transporting school children are often overloaded.
It was also brought to the notice of the high court that in some instances more than a dozen children were seen commuting in the cycle/auto rickshaws.
The court was hearing a contempt petition filed by advocate Vikram Sharda on the traffic related issues in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
The bench held the safety of school children is of paramount importance.
The matter would now come up for hearing on July 21.
