Soon, a mechanism for environmental auditing

The Delhi government is considering the setting up of a mechanism under which environmental auditing of various agencies, departments, RWAs, schools and colleges will be carried out on a regular basis to measure the greenhouse gas emission by them.

The idea has been mooted by chief minister Sheila Dikshit during a conference on climate change and officials said such a mechanism would encourage competition among various government departments to go for cutting their emissions while carrying out various activities.
"The environmental auditing will encourage a healthy competition among various government departments, schools, colleges and resident welfare associations (RWAs) to reduce their carbon footprints," said a senior official.
He said government may institute awards for best performing departments as well as schools and colleges.
Dikshit put forward the idea during the valedictory session of the New Delhi conference on cities and climate change organised by Delhi government.
The two-day conference was organised by Delhi government to seek opinion of global experts in formulating a long-term plan in making the national capital a carbon-neutral city in a 20-year time period.
