Sultry Delhi cools down with first monsoon rains

The city saw the first spell of the southwest monsoon showers on Sunday providing a much needed relief to the residents from the rising humidity.

The monsoon is finally here and that too three days ahead of schedule.

The city saw the first spell of the southwest monsoon showers on Sunday providing a much needed relief to the residents from the rising humidity.

"The southwest monsoon has hit the capital three days ahead of schedule. On Saturday, it had covered parts of Haryana, and Punjab. By Monday, it is likely to cover all of Haryana and Delhi," said BP Yadav, Director, Met Department.

"The monsoons have already covered most parts of northwest India and will completely cover the region within the next two days. However, this year the monsoons will be below normal with the country receiving a total of 95% of average rainfall," added Yadav.

On Sunday, the northwest parts of the city such as Narela and Pitampura received heavy rainfall, with an average rainfall record of 72 mm and 52 mm, respectively in both areas, while other parts of the city recorded an average of 2mm rainfall.

The early monsoon spell brought down temperatures, with the maximum and minimum temperatures settling at 30.7 and 25.9 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Following the spell of rain and thundershowers, the city however, came to a partial halt, with incidents of waterlogging and uprooted trees slowing down life in several areas, such as Netaji Nagar and parts of Rohini.
