The LGBT are living in trauma and crisis

Nothing’s more traumatic than living in uncertainty. And that’s how the LGBT community is living. Psychiatrists report that the sexual minorities are in a traumatised state and are experiencing a crisis due to the government’s back and forth movement on decriminalising gay sex.

While some face paranoia, some are battling suicidal urges. Rohit Gupta (name changed), a 20-year-old gay, has been suffering from depression and existential anxiety, ever since he heard the news about the Home Ministry calling gay sex “immoral” in the Supreme Court. “The judgment by Delhi High Court decriminalising homosexuality had given me hope. The questioning of this judgment makes me feel as if I’m being discarded and labelled as a criminal,” he says.

Rakhi Sawant, a 24-year-old transgender says, “The High Court judgement was a strong anchor. I am very confused about the debate that has triggered off again, questioning my existence.” Dr Pulkit Sharma, clinical psychologist, VIMHANS, says, “People playing these political and legal battles are being insensitive to emotions and mental health of gays. They are causing extreme trauma.” Psychiatrist Dr Avdesh Sharma, says a number of his LGBT clients have wrongly interpreted additional solicitor general PP Malhotra’s statement as a judgment. “It has lead to a lot of confusion. People are living in fear, and the most vulnerable of them have become suicidal,” he added.
