The family members of the inmate, identified as Mohammad Irshad, blamed Tihar Jail authorities for negligence in treatment. The police have initiated an inquiry in the matter.

“He was admitted on November 24 as he was battling with tuberculosis. On Monday, he died due to prolong illness,” a senior police officer said. Irshad was arrested in a kidnapping-cum-rape case earlier this year and his trial was going on in a lower court.

The body has been sent for the post-mortem examination and a magistrate enquiry has been ordered into the matter.
