The first incident, the police said, was reported from Rohini. The girl was identified as Mahek, 17.

“Soon after the results were announced, she shut herself in her room,” said an officer. Her parents broke the open door only to find her hanging from the ceiling fan. Mahek left behind a suicide note simply stating that she was ‘sorry’.

Seventen-year-old Vaishali was also found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room at her house in south Delhi’s Mehrauli.

“Since she did not leave behind a suicide note, we questioned her parents who said that she had been depressed ever since the results were declared,” said an officer. Her parents said she had set her heart on taking admission in a good college.
