Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan revealed this on Sunday while addressing the Urban Mobility India conference in the Capital. “Underground Metro rail will have five times more security risks as compared to an elevated metro. Besides, the construction of underground section is costlier,” said Sreedharan.

Delhi Metro currently has a 190km-long network and a majority of its corridors (142km) are elevated. In the proposed 116-km-long phase 3, nearly 75 km is elevated. Sreedharan emphasised on the need of successfully replicating the Delhi Metro model in other growing cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Jaipur and Hyderabad to facilitate an efficient and hassle-free urban transportation, which, he said, was a key component for sustainable economic growth.

“We must replicate the Delhi model in all these cities. It’s high time the country embraced Metro rail revolution for smoother and efficient mobility,” he said. Sreedharan also stressed on the urgent need of a Common Mobility Card, which will be launched for hassle-free commuting in public transportation services on inter-state routes.
