UPA only viable alternative for country: Congress

The Congress party on Monday exuded confidence about the party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) winning the Lok Sabha polls, and said the "battle is already won even before the elections have begun".

"We (Congress and UPA) have all the confidence that the battle is already won even before the elections have begun. The Congress-led UPA stand before the people with a very strong performance record for the fulfilment of promises in the manifesto and the Common Minimum Programme (CMP)," Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters.

"The UPA is the only viable alternative for the country," Natarajan said.

Natarajan said the main opponent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has been on the wane since the alliance got out of power and has now become virtually non-existent.

Replying to a question on pre-poll alliance with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, Natarajan said: "Negotiations will continue to be very tough. Talks are going on and will continue till the final picture emerges."
