Pande, involved in the daring daylight murder of East-West Airlines chief Thakiyuddin Wahid in Mumbai in 1995 on Rajan’s order, had allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping of two Delhi youth in 2004 from Mumbai. A team belonging to the CBI’s Interpol wing brought him to India and handed him to the Mumbai police.

Pandey’s name figures on Mumbai police’s most wanted list of gangsters at number 36.

A top lieutenant of fugitive underworld don Chhota Rajan Pandey had gone underground after a murderous attack on Rajan in Bangkok in September 2000. The attack was led by rival don Dawood Ibrahim’s sharpshooter Munna Jhingada.

Pandey was caught by the Vietnamese enforcement authorities in Hanoi on October 22 on the basis of a Red Corner notice issued against him in 2002 by the Interpol on CBI’s request, according to an investigator who requested anonymity. A resident of Nainital, Pandey is wanted by the Delhi police, Gujarat police and the Uttarakhand police. The Uttarakhand police had also declared a reward of R2 lakh on information leading to Pandey’s arrest.

“The CBI had issued the RCN request on the behest of the Mumbai police,” said CBI spokesperson RK Gaur. The CBI and the Mumbai police have only had skeletal information on the gangster, known for his striking looks, who is wanted in several murder cases.

In October 2004, Pandey’s men had kidnapped two Delhi youth—Prashant Rana and Pradeep Solanki—from near Mumbai airport for a ransom of Rs 1 crore. The duo was rescued later by the Surat and Valsad police in Valsad, Gujarat.

Pandey had also tried to extort Rs 2 crore from Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan in 2007 after the success of his movie, Om Shanti Om.
