The post was lying vacant for the past six months following previous chairman Barjinder Singh's retirement in September.
After his swearing-in ceremony, Sudhakar said: "Ensuring uninterrupted power supply was his priority. "I'm new to this job. I am happy I was selected for this challenging assignment. I will strive to ensure more efficiency in the sector," he told reporters.
Sudhakar, a 1976-batch IAS officer, will have a tenure of five years as chairman. He was given oath of office by power minister Harun Yusuf.
Sudhakar comes to the hot seat at a time when the power sector in Delhi is going through a tumultuous phase with the DERC and the Delhi government embroiled in a public interest litigation over fixing of tariff.
As DERC chairman, Sudhakar's first task will be to finalise the process of fixing new power tariff for 2011-12.
The chiefs of three discoms were also present in the function.
