The Kashmere Gate-Central Secretariat corridor that will have eight stations will be ready for operation by the end of 2014. It is expected to take a sizable portion of commuter load from the busiest interchange station of Rajiv Chowk.

The station registers footfall of about five lakh daily.

The tunneling machine was lowered near Chemlsford Club in central Delhi. The machine has been brought from German company Herrenknecht and assembled in Chennai.

The tunneling work till Janpath will be completed by June 2012, said DMRC officials.

“We will be using more than 20 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in Phase 3. This is one of the safest methods,” said DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh.

Singh also said that TBMs will be used in this corridor as it passes through the old Delhi area which has a number of old and heritage buildings.
