The constable is in a critical condition and has slipped into a coma. He is admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

He has been identified as Vipin Tomar, a native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Tomar joined the Delhi police in 2010 and is currently posted at the Barakhamba Road police station. The police are yet to ascertain why Tomar tried to commit suicide. His colleagues told HT that Tomar was disturbed due to family issues. Tomar’s marriage is scheduled for February 10.

A senior police officer said the incident took place at 8.30 am at the Minto Road police picket where Tomar was posted along with other traffic police personnel.

“The preliminary probe into the incident has revealed that he had been staying at police barracks in the Paharganj police station building for the past one year,” said the police officer.

On Sunday, the officer said, Tomar arrived at the Barakhamba Road police station to resume duty after spending Saturday at his hometown. At around 7.50 am, he went to the police station’s malkhana where the malkhana in-charge issued his service pistol.“Tomar took his service pistol and reached the Minto Road police picket. After about 20 minutes, Tomar took out his service pistol, pointed it at his head and fired. Hearing the gunshot, the traffic police personnel rushed to the spot. He was immediately rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital,” said the officer.
