I did not get through my CAT this year. I am presently working with a small company as a junior engineer. Though I will attempt CAT again next year, I want to know the other options available for me in management studies at my level.

The CAT exam is not the only route to a management programme. There are several MBA schools that admit on the basis of other tests such as the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA).

Symbiosis, Pune and XLRI in Jamshedpur and Bhubaneshwar conduct their own tests. Four of the IITs also conduct MBA programmes for which admission is through the JMET.

PG diplomas in Business Management (PGDBM) are offered by many institutes with good placements. You can specialise in management — finance, marketing, international business and so on.

Some institutes offer part-time courses for which you will not need to give up your job.

There are several institutions offering MBA through distance learning like AIMA in New Delhi. There are also the reputed institutions like the XLRI at Jamshedpur, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, in Pune, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management, Mumbai, IMT Ghaziabad, and others.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, Madurai Kamraj University, Punjab University, Patiala and Bharathiar University in Coimbatore, also offer MBA programmes.
