Educational Testing Service (ETS), creators of the Test of English as a Foreign Language, awarded certificates to the first ten recipients of their TOEFL Star Performer Programme in India.

The winners include Amresh Gupta from Gurgaon, the first person from the country to be declared a TOEFL Star Performer, Abhinay Jha from Jamshedpur and Vandit Shah from West Bengal.

On February 5, 2009, ETS announced that it would launch a pilot programme to offer TOEFL Star Performer certificates for students who have taken the test in India. The pilot programme allows all test-takers from January 1, 2009 to the end of the year to be eligible for these certificates. TOEFL Star Performer certificates are given at three levels - gold, silver and bronze. Candidates achieving a minimum TOEFL iBT total score of 110 and a minimum section score of 25 in all four skills will be designated gold-level star performers. Those with a total score of 100 and minimum section scores of 22 will be designated silver-level star performers, while students with a total score of 90 and minimum section scores of 21 will be recognised as bronze-level star performers.
