DU is a favourite with Asian students

This year, Delhi University’s new session will have a very ‘Sub-continental’ flavour to it. And why not? Out of 550 foreign students who are admitted to DU each year, a major proportion of the applicants this year belong to the SAARC region and Asian countries.

In fact, of all the SAARC countries the maximum in applications has been received from the students of Afghanistan. According to professors, the popularity is largely dictated by the domestic and regional situation in the native country.

“Earlier the students from African countries like Sudan, Somalia and Nigeria comprised around 45 per cent of the foreign students. But the Civil Wars at home, and the regional situation has meant that the figures of students from there dropped.

"On the contrary, the fall of Taliban, improved situation in Nepal, and closer regional ties have meant a drastic rise in the students from SAARC and other Asian countries”, informs Professor AS Narag, foreign students’ advisor, DU.

“Getting an Indian degree is a big thing in Afghanistan. In Kabul, some of the successful officials have studied in India.

"Of all those who want to study in India, only a handful ultimately make it,” said Jahan, a student from Afghanistan, who has just applied to DU.
