The University Grants Commission (UGC) has allocated Rs. 1.75 crore to build the hostel, which will come up at the University polo ground.

“The fund has been allotted to the university for contributing to the field of shooting,” said Anil Kumar Kalkal, secretary of DU’s Sports Council.

Apart from the hostel, Rs. 90 lakh from the fund will be used to build a proper shooting range and Rs. 10 lakh to purchase equipment.

This time, nine shooters will go from DU to participate in the World University Games at Gwangju City in South Korea.

The shooters will participate in the 25 metres sports pistol (women), air pistol (women) and air rifle (women).

While nine have been selected for shooting, one has been chosen for Judo, one for tennis and one for the athletics events.

“It is after a long time that such a big contingent of the Delhi University will be participating in the University Games,” said Kalkal.

When the games was held at Kazan in Russia in 2013, only three students from the varsity had represented the country.

Two of them had gone for the shooting event and the other one for athletics.

Most of the students who have been selected for the games are girls from women’s colleges.
