More than half a decade ago, most on-stage comedy was ­slapstick and involved poking fun at ­public figures through mimicry. If the rising popularity of TV shows like Comedy Nights with Kapil is any indication, stand-up comedy is coming of age in India. A ­stand-up comedian ­performs in front of a live audience, usually speaking directly to them. He/she recites fast paced humorous stories, short jokes and one-liners called a monologue, routine or act.
