Ignou opens admission window for July intake

Indira Gandhi National Open University is inviting applications; plans to start some bachelors’ courses.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) opened the admission window for distance-learning courses offered in the July 2013 session. The closing date for applications is June 15, 2013.

Ignou has two admission cycles – January and July. For the July 2013 intake, the university is offering courses including BA, BSc, BCom, BSW, BBA (RS), BCA, bachelor of tourism studies and bachelor preparatory programme (a six-month course for those aged 18 and above who have not passed Class 12 - see box). Students can opt for different majors in the degree programmes.

At present, the university is planning to start some bachelors’ courses in areas including rural development, vocational studies and art education, among others, says M Aslam, vice chancellor, Ignou. The university is not offering admission to any regular course now. “We do not now offer any campus-based, full-time course now. The earlier (full-time) courses are being taken to their logical end,” says Aslam.

Being a national open university, Ignou has numerous options open to aspirants across the country and even abroad. It has 30.16 lakh enrolees. In 2012-13, it admitted 6,96,753 students, both fresh and re-registrations.

Of its 16.64 lakh bachelors’ students, 2.56 lakh are from Delhi/NCR. It boasts “significant” presence in 43 countries where around 54,000 students are reading Ignou courses.

Countrywide, the university has 3413 study centres – called Learner Support Centres – 224 of which are in Delhi/NCR. It has 700 to 900 exam centres every year, their number varying with the number of candidates.
