Ask most people in Delhi-NCR their views about the Metro system, and they would exude pride in the city’s lifeline, which is also the longest such metro network across India. In terms of network length, Hyderabad and Chennai have the second and third longest Metro systems as of today.

Kolkata has the country’s oldest Metro system which became operational in 1984. In Chennai, Metro services began in 2015. Mumbai Metro, which comprises of an elevated line from Versova to Ghatkopar, went operational in June 2014 and construction on four lines is also on in various stages.

Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, Noida and Gurugram are other parts of the country where the travelling public have availed this convenient and efficient mode of urban transport. Along the way, many of these systems have chalked up impressive breakthroughs.

In 2011, Bengaluru Metro opened the first underground metro line in South India. In 2017, the inauguration of Hyderabad’s 30-km stretch from Miyapur to Nagole, also opened up India’s longest rapid transit metro line in one go. Jaipur, Rajasthan, is home to a first of its kind in India triple storey elevated road and Metro track while Kochi, Kerala, has the country’s first Metro that boasts rail, road as well as water transport facilities
