With an ever increasing influx of students from all over India to Delhi University, accommodation poses as a major problem for the girls and their anxious parents every year.

After having debated the issue for long, the colleges have finally started showing concern. Kavita Sharma, Principal, Hindu College, said that Hindu College would be opening up a women’s hostel for approximately 26 students adjoining the boys hostel.

The grants for establishing a hostel has been duly approvedby the UGC and prospectively, the end of the academic year would see a hostel for girls. Venkateswara College is all geared to open a women’s hostel this academic year while a girls’ hostel was established at Ramjas last year.

SR Arora, principal, Hans Raj, said that the college has plans of setting up a girls hostel but dearth of ‘space and money’ is a hindrance. Fifty per cent of the funds are granted by UGC, however there are no concrete plans as yet.

Principal of Ramjas, Rajendra Prasad, when enquired said that since the hostel was thrown open to students quite late in the year, many of the 80 seats that it provides, were left vacant.

The question however remains, that even though these colleges are opening up hostels for women, how many students will really benefit from it. Till then it is business time for the private hostels and PG accommodations.
