Human resource Minister Arjun Singh’s proposal for 27 per cent reservation for OBC students in centrally funded higher-education institutions will take some time to be implementedif at all it comes.
Sources say the quota for OBCs cannot be implemented from the coming academic year as the admission process has already started in the IITs, IIMs and medical and engineering colleges.
Again, amid growing student protests and resistance from within the government and its affiliated bodies, the draft reservation bill of the HRD Ministry may land up with the Group of Ministers (GoM) for wider consultation.
“It is one of the possibilities,” an official said. Sources say the government wants to allay all fears of its possible impact before introducing the bill in Parliament.
Though all political parties are supporting the quota, it has failed to get support of corporate players and intellectuals.
Six of the eight members of the Knowledge Commissionhave opposed the quota saying it would adversely affect the quality of education.
