Revival of science courses
With the restructured B Sc programmes in place for over a year, the Science courses are back in vogue again. There is going to be a marked increase in the cut-off percentages for Science courses partly due to the growing demand for them.

There is going to be a marked increase in the cut-off percentages for Science courses partly due to the growing demand for them. “Our Environmental Science Course draws immense appeal as there is a great demand for professionals from this field in US and Europe,” says Dr Rajendra Prasad, principal, Ramjas College that also offers add-on courses like Environmental Management and Environmental Law.
The B Sc Applied Life Sciences programme includes courses like Environmental Science, Sericulture and Agro Pest Control while the B SC Applied Physical Sciences programme includes Industrial Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry & Biochemistry, Electronics and Computer Science and B Sc (G) Mathematical Sciences.
“Science has seen a major revival in the past two years. This year there is a 15 to 20 per cent increase in applicants,” says AS Reddy, principal, Sri Venkateswara College.
Here, Wipro, Infosys, Mckinsey & Company recruit Science graduates as management trainees. International Research & Development firms setting shop in India have also spurred the demand for lesser-known Science courses.
“The drop out rates in these courses has reduced drastically. Now students either opt to work for R&D firms or pursue masters in their choice of stream,” says Dr Malti Subramanian, principal, Daulat Ram College.
Compared to B Sc (Hons), B.Sc applied physical/life courses offer students a combination of subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, besides the main discipline.
“Students pursuing these programmes can opt for post-graduate studies in varied disciplines like Genetics, Biotechnology, etc,” says Dr Subramanian. Except for the Computer Science programme, there are only a handful of DU colleges that offer Applied Physical/Life Sciences programmes.
