Here’s the low-down on the facilities offered at some of the college residences

Miranda House

Rooms: There are 125 rooms for 250 students. For each student, there is a bed with storage box; a study table; a chair; an overhead book rack; a bedside console and a mirror
Facilities: Launderette: An in-house launderette with fully-automatic washing machines, dryers and ironing facilities
Common Room: Is equipped with an LCD TV
Medical Room: Is equipped with a first-aid kit, medical bed, stretcher and wheelchair

IP College for Women

Slots for/fees: There are 210 (approx) seats available. Annual fee is Rs. 56,000. IP Hostel: 180 seats and annual fee is R85,000
Rooms: First-year students are allotted triple-seaters, while second and final-year students are given double-seaters. IP Hostel has only double-seater rooms
Facilities: The common room has a TV set
Cyber café: There is a cyber café on campus which is open till 7pm
Medical facilities: The medical officer in-charge has a medical kit
Security: Curfew time: Students are not allowed outside after 7.30pm
Campus security: There are security guards stationed around both the hostels

Mess/ menu: Hygienic and well-maintained. Breakfast menu includes options such as eggs, milk/tea, cornflakes, fresh fruits, upma, etc. Lunch usually includes dishes such as aloo matar, gobhi, stuffed paranthas, etc. Evening tea is served with snacks such as samosas, idlis, etc. Special meals are prepared on occasions

Lady Shri Ram College for Women

Rooms: Rooms are available on a sharing basis

Security: There are adequate security arrangements for the hostel residents Curfew time: 7.30pm

Mess/ menu: The menu is well organised. Once every two weeks students are treated to a variety of desserts from ice cream to kheer. Festivals mean feasts: Sewaiyaan are served on Eid and Pongal (rice porridge) is served on the festival. According to hostellers, the food is filling, healthy and tasty

St Stephen’s College

Slots for/fees: There are seats for 400 students; both men and women are admitted on merit basis. The hostel fee is under revision
Rooms: First and second-year women are allotted rooms on twin-sharing basis, as are first-year male students. Male students of second and third-year and female students of third year are allotted single-seaters
Facilities: Common room: There are three common rooms for juniors, seniors and women, provided with TV sets, newspapers and magazines
Medical care: A trained nurse and a doctor are available on campus
Security: Curfew time: Both male and female residents have to be in by 10pm

Mess/ menu: Non-vegetarian food (mutton, chicken or fish) is served six days a week. Vegetarian food includes dal, sabzi, rice, chapati, curd and salad. A special lunch is prepared on occasions like Onam, etc

Hans Raj College

Slots for/Fees: 200 seats for men. The fee is about Rs. 50,000. Contact college for this year’s fee
Rooms: Mostly single and double seaters
Facilities: Common room: Has an LCD TV and music system. There are facilities for indoor games such as carrom and chess. Reading room: Is likely to be air-conditioned. Medical care: Students are registered with the WUS healthcare centre which has a psychiatrist, dentist, surgeon, cardiologist, pediatrician, physician and other consultants. The centre is situated in north campus
Security: Curfew time: In time is 10pm

Mess/menu: The students have a say in deciding the menu. Non-vegetarian fare is served for dinner on all days except Tuesday. Lunch usually consists of dal, sabzi, rice and chapati. North Indian dishes such as chhole bhature, rajma chawal, aloo matar, paneer gravy, etc are served for meals. Curd and salad are the usual accompaniments

Hindu College

Medical care: All students are required to fill the WUS medical form. First-aid kit is available
Security: Curfew time: Entry restricted after 10pm Campus security: Guards are available 24x7

Mess/menu: The mess is managed by the mess committee and the menu is decided by students. Both vegetarian and non- vegetarian food is served. The students have the freedom to decide the menu that offers a variety of food items

Ramjas College

Slots for/fees: There are 120 seats for men and 80 seats for women (approx). Contact the college for fee details. Hostellers pay annual fees plus monthly mess and other charges
Rooms: The rooms are clean. Each room accommodates two students
Facilities: Common room: Recreational facilities such as television, music system, indoor games such carrom are available
Internet connectivity: The hostel is Wi-Fi-enabled
Laundry: A special laundry unit with three automatic machines is available in the women’s hostel
Medical care: Healthcare facility is available through the WUS health centre in north campus
Security: Curfew time: Students are not allowed to be out after 9pm
Campus security: Guards are stationed around the hostel on a 24-hour basis

Mess/menu: The mess is spacious and well- maintained. Non-vegetarian food is provided on Wednesdays and Sundays while vegetarian fare is served on an everyday basis. Tea is served in the evenings.

Women residents have access to an exclusive pantry fully fitted for preparing snacks and mini meals at times

Daulay Ram College for Women

Mess/menu: Hygienic and well-organised. Non-vegetarian food is served three days a week. Dishes such as rajma chawal, mixed vegetables, paneer curry and kheer are served regularly. Papad, pickles and curd are provided as accompaniments. Snacks are served with evening tea

Lady Irwin College

The regular fare includes dishes such as chhole bhature, dal makhni, shahi paneer, etc. Egg curry is served occasionally. Evening tea with snacks and fruit juice, too, are served

Sri Venkateswara College

International Students House for Women

Slots for/fee: Seventy per cent of ISHW residents are international students and the rest Indian. PG students and UG students (foreigners only): Rs. 26,400 (for Indian students) and Rs. 32,400 (for foreign students), payable at the time of admission
Rooms: The total number of rooms is 98, of which 20 are for Indians and the rest for international students
Facilities: Medical room: A visiting doctor and a medical room equipped with basic medical facilities are available
Internet room: An air-conditioned room with internet-enabled computers. The ISHW is equipped with high-speed wireless internet for the use of all residents.
Gymnasium: An air-conditioned gym has a number of modern machines
Bus service: Bus shuttle is available from the ISHW complex to the university’s north campus from morning till evening
Security: Curfew time - 10pm. Failure to return before 10pm will be considered as a night out.
Campus security: Guards are deployed

Mess/menu: Non-vegetarian food is offered five times a week. Two extra dishes for foreign students — boiled vegetable in the morning and soup at night. Dessert is served three times a week. Special breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays

Dos and don’ts
* It’s time to be self-disciplined and self-motivated. You’re on your own now. So you need to set some ground rules for yourself
* Make a schedule for yourself. Keep time for self-study, project work, assignments
* Utilise your weekends for shopping, paying bills and socialising
* Take time out for recreational activities, entertainment and sports. Some Delhi University hostels have lush lawns, walks on which could soothe your nerves
* Don’t let laundry pile up
* Be careful about whom you go out with for night outs
* Be responsible for yourself. It’s in your interest to observe curfew hours
* Don’t splurge on fast food. Keep snacks such as home-made cookies, dry fruits and roasted whole-grain namkeens (grams and pulse-based combinations)

Rooms for hire

North Campus

Areas covered: Kamla Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Dhaka village, Kingsway Camp
Type of accommodation: Single seater, two-seaters and three-seater rooms
Range of rentals: R8000 to R14,000 per person per month
Facilities available:
“Most PG owners provide two to four meals during the day. There is Wi-Fi connectivity in the rooms and some rooms are air-conditioned. In-house launderette facilities are also provided by some PG owners. A few of these buildings even have CCTV cameras installed in the corridors,” says RK Agrawal, a broker with Home Way Estates, Kamla Nagar.
Security/safety in the area: The areas in and around north campus are usually safe
Greenery: Situated close to the ridge, north campus is high on the green quotient
Shopping options: Students prefer going to Kamla Nagar market, which is a hot favourite. Model Town market is also a popular shopping destination
Metro connectivity: The areas are well-connected to the Metro. Vishwavidyalaya, Model Town, Kashmere Gate and GTB Nagar are the prominent stations
Entertainment options: KNags is where you could just hang out

South Campus
Areas covered: Satya Niketan, Safdarjung Development Area, Green Park, Saket
Type of accommodation: Single seater, two-seaters and three-seater rooms
Range of rentals: R4000 to R8000 per person per month
Facilities available:
“Most PG accommodation owners provide two meals a day. The rentals may go up depending on the facilities offered. The rent is high for air-conditioned rooms,” says Deepak Ghai, a property dealer with Investors Choice, Safdarjung Development Area.
Security/safety in the area: Some areas are relatively safer than the others. Places in and around Satya Niketan are deserted at times
Greenery: Safdarjung Development Area and Green Park are green enough
Shopping options: Students prefer going to Sarojini Nagar, Dilli Haat, Lajpat Nagar market, Select City Walk, Saket, MGF Mall, Saket, South Extension market and Ansal Plaza
Metro connectivity: The areas are well-connected to the Metro. Green Park, INA and AIIMS are are the prominent stations
Entertainment options: 3Cs in Lajpat Nagar, PVR Priya, Vasant Kunj
