It has since been possible for the college to attempt limited curricular and examination reforms to make education meaningful and updated. Continuous assessment of student’s performance during the semester and the semester-end examinations form the basis for the award of degrees. However, the degrees continue to be awarded by the University of Madras. The Parent-Teacher Association has been functioning for the welfare of the students. The College has been accredited with Four Stars by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The math department here is famous as it literally discovered the mathematics genius Srinivas Ramanujan. The then department head Prof. Iyer encouraged his student to pursue original ideas, despite his failures in formal academics. His continued support helped him send his research to Prof. Hardy on January 16, 1913.

History
Presidency Colleges were established in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras at the behest of Sir Thomas Munro (once Governor of Madras). A preparatory school was started in Egmore known as Edinburgh Home on October 15, 1840, which eventually became Presidency

Programmes & cut-off
Offers 20 PG Courses and 23 UG Courses through 24 departments almost all of them offering research facilities leading to M.Phil, and Ph.D. degrees.The admission involves ranking counseling and seat allocation based on quota system. The students upon choosing the course of their choice submit their mark sheet and the cut offs are released there after. 2011 : B.com - 89 % ( Sc ) 92% (BC). Admissions in progress
