UGC proposes uniform calendar

What if the results and admissions of all universities were to start at the same time of the year? It would mean a much wider choice of courses and easy migration opportunity for students.
Working on this logic and in a bid to provide smooth shifting of students from one university in the country to another, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering a uniform academic year at the ‘national level’ for all universities.
To start with, the commission has proposed a uniform academic year for the central universities. “The uniform calendar will have similar dates for opening and closing of the universities and for holding examinations and declaring results. This will help students to plan their admissions better,” a senior UGC official told Hindustan Times.
In many universities, admissions close before results of some other universities are declared. This, according to UGC officials, limits the choice of students. For example, admissions in many post-graduate courses in Delhi University close before results of universities like Himachal University or Patna University are declared.
Officials say it will be a flexible academic calendar, where the universities will have different options without disturbing the basic uniformity for examinations and declaration of results. The Central Universities have academic autonomy and so, UGC can only advise on the calendar.
