UP Board Result 2018: Autorickshaw driver’s son Akash Maurya is joint Class 12 topper

Akash Maurya, a student of Sri Sai Inter College in Barabanki’s Lakhperabagh, and Rajneesh Shukla of Fatehpur’s Sarvodaya Inter College scored 93.20% marks in the Class 12 exam.

Akash Maurya, an autorickshaw driver’s son, was declared as the joint topper in the science stream of the UP Board 2018 intermediate or Class 12 board examinations, results of which were declared on Sunday.

Akash, a student of Sri Sai Inter College in Barabanki’s Lakhperabagh, and Rajneesh Shukla of Fatehpur’s Sarvodaya Inter College scored 466 or 93.20% marks out of 500.

The resident of Barabanki district got 97 in mathematics and physics, 94 in chemistry, 91 in Hindi and 87 in English.

“I want to become an engineer so that I can change my family’s fortune,” Akash said.

He said his grandfather Sarvjit Maurya, a farmer, is his role model.

“It was he who encouraged me and my parents that I should be allowed to study,” said Akash who loves to read fiction and listen to Bollywood singer Kishore Kumar’s songs.

“Had my grandfather not stepped in, I would have to drive an auto rickshaw like my father to support the family. I’m grateful to my grandfather who withstood all pressure and allowed me to continue with my studies,” said a jubilant Akash.

His mother Phulkesri Maurya is a homemaker.

Akash’s chemistry teacher Surendra Verma praised him as an extremely hardworking student.

“He religiously used to complete all the homework assignments that I used to give. He is regular in school. We are proud of him. And I wish him all the luck,” Verma said.

UP Board result 2018 shows 137 students - 90 boys and 37 girls - scored 90% and above marks in the intermediate exams.

Officials said 72.43% students cleared the intermediate exams this year as compared to 82.62% last year. There was a 10.19% dip in intermediate results this year.

There were 29,82,996 students who registered for the intermediate exams this year but 26,04,093 appeared and 18,86,050 were successful.
