Its campus, covering 300 acres, is located in a beautifully wooded area of Jouy-en-Josas — which rolls delightfully off your tongue — in Paris. HEC (Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales) Paris has been consistently ranked Number one in Europe by the Financial Times for six years from 2006 to 2011, and according to Philippe Oster, communication, development and admissions director for the MBA programme, it’s number one in Europe and number four worldwide in terms of alumni holding CEO positions in Fortune 500 companies.

Talking about the B-school which was founded in 1881, Delphine Wharmby, communications director, says it is affiliated with the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a public body representing more than three lakh businesses in the Greater Paris area. Degree and certificate programmes offered include the HEC Grande Ecole master of science in management and HEC masters; PhD; MBA; executive MBA; and TRIUM global EMBA (an alliance HEC has with NYU Stern and LSE to understand future opportunities that emerge from today’s challenges). Agreements have been signed withWharton, New York University, Stern School of Business, MIT, Keio University, Tsinghua University and London Business School.

Moumita Das, who did a stint with L’Oreal before joining HEC for a PhD, feels its strong research focus was very well aligned with her interests. The scholarship she has got has been a great support. “The alumni base and the student pool are two great leverage points to help me do surveys etc for my research,” Das says.

HEC’s location in the Paris area, which includes La Defense, Europe’s largest business district, ensures that students get “phenomenal exposure to industries and companies as diverse as luxury, agribusiness, energy, water, FMCG and automotive,” say Yaseen Mubarak and Saransh Goyal from IIM-Ahmedabad, here as part of the HEC Grande Ecole Master PGP dual degree programme.

The India connect is strong, says Genevieve Barre, director international development. Asia-Pacific. Indian Railways, Infosys etc have been coming in for executive programmes. About 143 Indian students were on campus in 2012 for exchange and degree programmes, including two PhDs. Agreements have been signed with IIMs -Bangalore and Ahmedabad; The Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, and the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

Pratik Irle (Grande Ecole master), Teja Priyanka and Rajiv Chatterjee (MSc strategic management) and Sharat Gangwani, Karan Kapoor, Nitin Nambiar, Alpanaa Savarna and Deepesh Gambhir love life on campus. Offsite camps, sports tournaments and team projects help them strengthen leadership skills. Savarna remembers being very impressed by the institute even during the applications process, which “prompts you to do a lot of inward thinking.” Access to clubs such as the ones on luxury and marketing, consulting and marketing, sustainability etc help you network as well.

PhD scholar Nimish Rustagi, who has ‘returned’ to HEC (he was an MBA student here) says he picked the school because unlike an American ‘job-oriented’ B-school, “you are taught over here to be creative through use of poetry etc.” Faculty such as Prof Frederic Dalsace, who heads a chair (titled social business/enterprise and poverty) chaired by microcredit founder Muhammad Yunus, which attempts to study the link between business and poverty, are definitely role models for intelligent young people seeking to find meaningful answers to life.
