Union home minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah on Saturday exuded confidence about his party’s victory in at least four of the five states where Assembly election has been held and the results of which will be known on March 10. Addressing a joint press briefing with BJP national president JP Nadda in Delhi, Shah said the saffron camp will once again form governments in four states and those hoping for a dilution in the party's mandate were in for some disappointment.

He further said elections are not just an exercise of forming a government for the BJP leadership. “For us, it is an opportunity to take our ideology and work done by the government to people and learn about their issues,” he added

“We will form the government again in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur and perform well in Punjab,” he said, adding though some leaders may have left the party, voters are still with the BJP.

Shah and Nadda also agreed on a massive mandate for the Yogi Adityanath-ruled government in Uttar Pradesh. Nadda said the main focus area of the party has been on empowerment of women, youth, poor and needy, and the farmers among other sectors. "People will give BJP a good majority in four states where it is in power," he added.

Stating that the party ran a scientific and well-organised campaign, Shah said, "We saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity in the five poll-bound states was more than that of any previous prime minister."

Shah also spoke on India's ongoing evacuation in Ukraine. The home minister said more than 13,000 Indians have returned to the country and more were on their way on rescue flights.

“This had a positive impact on elections and on the people also,” he said.

Assembly elections are being held in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur – the results to which will be declared on March 10. Polling was held in Manipur during the day, while the final phase of voting in Uttar Pradesh will be held on March 7.
