Puducherry Assembly Election 2021

Puducherry Assembly Election 2021 to 30 seats was held in a single phase on April 6. There are 33 members in the Puducherry assembly, of which 30 are elected by voters and three are nominated by the Centre. All India NR Congress (AINRC), which heads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Puducherry, is contesting from 16 of the 30 constituencies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or AIADMK, the other constituents of the alliance, are seeking election from nine and five seats, respectively. N Rangasamy, AINRC leader and a former chief minister, is seeking election from two segments - Thattanchavady and Yanam. The Congress, which leads the Secular Democratic Progressive Alliance in the Union territory, has been 15 assembly seats and its ally, the DMK, was earmarked 13 constituencies. The Congress is supporting an Independent candidate on one of the seats from its quota. The VCK and CPI, the other constituents of the alliance, have been earmarked one seat each. The Congress-led alliance government in Puducherry lost the vote of confidence in February in the face of its depleted strength of 11 against the opposition's 14 after the resignation of the ruling dispensation’s legislators. President's rule was imposed in Puducherry after the government fell. The last Puducherry assembly elections were held on May 16, 2016. The UPA government - with Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as partners - came to power in Puducherry in 2016 after winning 18 seats. While Congress won 15 seats, DMK emerged victorious on three. The Congress won the only Lok Sabha seat in the Union territory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Puducherry election result 2021 will be declared on May 2 along with those of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
